Andrew “Gumby” Breton is a UVA graduate, a Mary Munford PTA board member, and the former Chair of the Richmond City Democratic Committee. He has fifteen years of experience organizing communities around important issues at all levels of government, and has relationships in City Hall, the General Assembly, and across the city.
Breton first came to Richmond in 2008 from New York City to follow his future wife as she began her M.D. at VCU Medical School. They celebrated their wedding at the VMFA.
The mortgage crisis of 2008 also sparked Breton’s activism. Working in finance at BlackRock he believed we could have saved homeowners from losing their homes while rescuing the financial system. Instead, when banks were bailed out and working families lost everything, he quit BlackRock to study Economics at Duke University.
When his wife’s studies took them to Boston, Breton became deeply involved in community organizing and legislative advocacy there, serving as a chapter chair and as a statewide board member of Progressive Massachusetts, an influential organization dedicated to volunteer mobilization, legislative advocacy, candidate forums, and voter education.
Upon returning to Richmond, Breton became well-known for running phone banks and knocking doors for great candidates in the Richmond area. His local relationships and experience led him to become the Chair of the Richmond Democratic Committee. Meanwhile, he also dedicated himself to his local school community – chairing the fundraising efforts and working with parents at Mary Munford PTA to create several new programs.
Breton strives to connect neighbors to the legislative process and to each other. On City Council we can expect him to listen to all perspectives and work collaboratively for good solutions.
